BOOK - picture pie

i wanted to recommend two books today, that may have been intended for children, but have great appeal for designers and illustrators. picture pie and picture pie 2 are part of the ed emberley drawing book series. the idea is that you can creat all manner of objects, animals, birds and patterns from simple shapes. just check out that beautiful peacock above. see the books here in the print & pattern bookshop click here for USA and here for UK.

I had an Ed Emberly book when I was a kid and I found it again recently and gave it to my son, who has pretty much drawn every character now!

I've been using this book for the past 3 to 4 years now...I found it at a local library while searching for graphic design books and used the words "pie chart" in my search field. Ever since I've applied the picture pie theory to some of my designs and I go back to this book often for references. My version of the book is from 1984!) so I might buy these new ones. Thanks :-)

I love Ed Emberley's books, especially Picture Pie! I always recommend it to children's librarians as a sourcebook for doing bulletin boards. Thanks for showing his books off!

These are so cute. But the downside is that sometimes kids get in a rut, of thinking that there's only one way to draw something and no matter how hard you try to teach them observation skills, they still revert to the same shapes and patterns over and over... It's frustrating as a teacher sometimes, but on the other hand, as an artist and graphic designer, I'm drawn to the bright, happy colors and fun shapes. Oh well, I guess this just makes drawing fun for everybody, no matter their current skill level.
